What Is a PVDF Kynar 500® Finish?
A plain-language guide to one of the best-known high-performance finishes for architectural metal roofing—including what the name means, how the coating protects colour, and what Ontario homeowners should confirm before choosing a roof.
PVDF and Kynar 500® Are Related, but They Are Not Identical Terms
“PVDF,” “Kynar,” and “Kynar 500” are often used as if they mean any premium metal-roof paint. That shorthand can hide important differences.
PVDF is the resin chemistry. It is valued for strong carbon-fluorine bonds that help the cured coating tolerate ultraviolet exposure and long-term outdoor weathering. Kynar 500® is a specific branded PVDF resin manufactured by Arkema. Coating manufacturers formulate finished paint systems using that resin together with pigments, solvents and other components, then licensed coaters apply those systems to prepared metal in controlled factory conditions.
This is why the most accurate wording is usually “a coating made with Kynar 500® PVDF resin” rather than simply calling the roof itself “Kynar.” Other PVDF resin brands and coating-system trade names also exist. The panel manufacturer’s technical literature should identify the actual coating specification supplied for the selected profile and colour.
Who Actually Makes Kynar 500® Resin-Based Coatings?
Arkema makes Kynar 500® PVDF resin, but Arkema does not manufacture the finished architectural coatings sold under brands such as Fluropon® and Duranar®.
Arkema uses a licensing program intended to maintain formulation and quality consistency. Its current Americas licensee directory identifies The Sherwin-Williams Company and PPG Industries, Inc. as officially licensed manufacturers of coatings made with Kynar 500® PVDF resin. Those coating manufacturers combine PVDF base resin with their own resin technology, pigments and complete coating formulations. Coil coaters then apply and thermally cure the specified coating onto metal coil under factory-controlled conditions. A roofing manufacturer purchases coated coil and roll-forms it into panels or shingles.

How to Choose a Kynar 500® Resin-Based Roof Colour
Arkema directs buyers seeking physical samples of Kynar 500® resin-based coatings to its licensed coating manufacturers, PPG and Sherwin-Williams. That is useful guidance because Kynar 500® is not one colour chart. The resin can be used in many qualified coating formulations, and the available colours depend on the coating manufacturer, coil coater, roofing manufacturer, metal substrate, panel profile and production program.
Solid Colours
Solid architectural colours provide a consistent visual field. Pigment chemistry still affects fade performance, so compare warranty limits for the exact selected colour.
Mica and Metallic Effects
Mica, pearlescent and metallic systems interact with light and viewing angle. They may require special layer constructions, directional installation and tighter batch coordination.
Solar-Reflective Colours
Some colours use infrared-reflective pigment technology. Ask for tested solar reflectance and thermal emittance values for the exact coated metal—not a value for a different colour.
Why a Physical Metal Sample Matters
A phone, computer monitor or printed brochure cannot reproduce the exact colour, gloss, texture or light response of coated metal. Review a current physical sample on the intended substrate, outdoors, in both direct sun and shade. For a large or highly visible roof, confirm whether all material will come from a coordinated production lot. Metallic and mica-effect colours can show direction or lot-to-lot variation more readily than many solid colours.
The small sample is for colour approval, not a complete prediction of how the roof will look. Panel ribs, seams, roof slope, building orientation, nearby trees and the sky’s reflection all affect the finished appearance.
Fluropon® Coatings Made With Kynar 500® PVDF Resin
According to Arkema’s official Sherwin-Williams licensee page, Sherwin-Williams manufactures Fluropon® architectural coil and extrusion coatings based on Kynar 500® PVDF resin. These are factory-applied architectural coating systems used where colour consistency, forming performance and long exterior durability are important.
Arkema identifies the following performance characteristics for the Fluropon® family:
- Superior resistance to ultraviolet rays to support long-term exterior colour performance.
- Outstanding colour retention and consistency across properly produced architectural components.
- Excellent overall adhesion as part of the properly prepared and cured coating system.
- Great flexibility and formability during manufacturing, when the coated coil is shaped into building products.
- High film integrity for protection against demanding exterior exposure.
Arkema also describes Fluropon® coating systems as providing protection against ultraviolet exposure, dirt and stains, chemicals, heat, humidity and corrosive salt spray. These are coating-family characteristics, not permission to use every Fluropon® product in every corrosive environment. The exact product data, substrate, pretreatment, primer, topcoat, exposure category and written warranty still control.
Duranar® Coatings and Kynar 500® PVDF Resin
PPG Industries, Inc. is an official Kynar 500® coating licensee in the Americas. PPG’s Duranar® family includes high-performance fluoropolymer coil and extrusion coatings used on architectural metal, including metal roofing and wall panels.
PPG states that its Duranar® coil coatings combine proprietary PPG resin and pigment technology with 70% fluoropolymer base resins. Its product information describes resistance to colour fade and long exterior exposure, plus solid, mica, metallic and cool-coating options. Product families identified by PPG include:
- Duranar® Solid Color: fluoropolymer coil coatings designed for colour and fade resistance in varied climates.
- Duranar® SUNSTORM®: mica-effect coatings that create a pearlescent or metalescent appearance.
- Duranar® XL: metallic systems with added clearcoat protection, including options intended for demanding seacoast and industrial exposure.
- Duranar® ULTRA-Cool®: coatings using solar-reflective technology for qualifying roof colours and energy-related specifications.
PPG reports that Duranar® technology was introduced in 1967 and that qualifying formulations use proprietary PPG resins and pigments in combination with Kynar 500® or other identified PVDF base resin. This detail matters: homeowners should verify the exact coating specification rather than assuming every product carrying a broad family name has the same layer count, pigment system, use case or warranty.
Factory Duranar® PVDF vs. Duranar® ADS Field Repair
Arkema’s PPG licensee page also highlights Duranar® ADS, a one-component, solvent-based, air-dry fluoropolymer system intended for properly prepared painted or bare aluminum and steel building components. PPG positions ADS for touch-up, repair and restoration of factory-applied coil and extrusion finishes. It is not the same application process as thermally cured, factory coil-coated roofing steel.
That distinction is especially important on a roof. Any touch-up or field repair must follow the panel and coating manufacturer’s written instructions. A field-applied repair can have different colour, gloss, weathering and warranty behaviour than the original factory finish.
How a Factory-Applied PVDF Metal Finish Works
Architectural roofing steel is normally protected as a layered product. Exact constructions vary, so the project-specific data sheet governs, but the basic sequence commonly includes a metallic-coated steel substrate, surface pretreatment, primer and a pigmented topcoat. The underside may use a different backer coating.
Protected Metal Substrate
The steel begins with its specified metallic corrosion-protection layer. Steel thickness and metallic coating designation are separate specifications from the colour finish.
Pretreatment and Primer
Surface preparation and primer help the coating system bond to the metal and contribute to corrosion performance. Edge conditions and installation details still matter.
PVDF-Based Topcoat
The colour-bearing topcoat contains durable resin and pigments selected for architectural exposure. It is applied and cured on a coil-coating line before panels are formed.
The result is a thin, engineered protective finish—not a thick waterproof membrane. The roof’s water management still depends on the panel profile, seams, valleys, flashings, underlayment, penetrations, ventilation strategy and workmanship.
What Does a PVDF Kynar 500® Finish Do for Metal Roofing?
- Helps retain colour: PVDF resin-based architectural coatings are selected when long-term resistance to ultraviolet-driven colour change is a priority.
- Helps resist chalking: Chalking is the powdery appearance that can develop as a coating binder weathers. High-performance PVDF systems are designed to limit this visible deterioration.
- Protects gloss and appearance: The finish helps the roof maintain a more consistent architectural appearance through repeated sun, rain and seasonal exposure.
- Handles demanding exterior environments: Kynar 500® resin-based finishes have a long history on roofing, wall cladding and other exposed architectural metal.
- Supports reflective colour options: Some PVDF-coated metal roofing colours are formulated with solar-reflective pigments. Actual reflectance and thermal emittance values are colour- and product-specific.
- Offers broad design flexibility: PVDF systems are available in many colours and may be specified for standing seam, metal panels and compatible architectural components.
These benefits do not mean every PVDF colour performs identically. Pigment selection, coating formulation, film build, substrate, manufacturing quality, exposure, roof slope and maintenance can affect the result. Dark colours can also show dust, pollen, salt deposits or minor surface variation differently from lighter colours.
PVDF Kynar 500® vs. WeatherXL™ and Crinkle Finishes
PVDF is not automatically the best choice for every house, profile or colour. Is PVDF a Good Choice for an Ontario Metal Roof?
It can be an excellent choice when appearance retention and proven architectural weathering performance are high priorities. Ontario roofs can experience intense summer sun, freeze-thaw cycles, wind-driven rain, snow, ice and large seasonal temperature swings. Southern urban sites may also face airborne dirt and pollution, while properties near industrial areas, shorelines or heavy tree cover can have different cleaning and exposure needs.
The finish is only one part of the decision. Homeowners should also review the roof profile, concealed or exposed fastening, panel attachment, steel gauge, metallic coating, snow-management needs, valleys, ventilation, underlayment and the installer’s details. For example, a Vicwest True Nature™ metal roof with a PVDF finish is a different assembly from an interlocking slate-look steel panel with a textured coating.
For any property exposed to unusual chemicals, salt, animal confinement, standing water, wet debris or direct contact with incompatible materials, ask the roofing manufacturer to confirm suitability in writing. Standard finish warranties commonly contain environmental, storage, installation and maintenance exclusions.

Identify the Coating
Ask for the exact coating family and whether the documented system is made with Kynar 500® PVDF resin.
Identify the Manufacturer
Record the roofing manufacturer, panel name, colour and coil-coating specification—not only the contractor’s description.
Read the Warranty
Check separate provisions for film integrity, colour change and chalking, plus the measurement method, term and exclusions.
Confirm the Substrate
Verify steel gauge and metallic coating. PVDF describes the painted finish and does not establish those underlying specifications.
Check Every Component
Confirm that trims, flashings and accessories use compatible materials and finishes where colour continuity is expected.
Review Colour Data
If solar performance matters, request the tested reflectance and emittance for the exact colour—not a general claim about metal roofing.
Approve a Physical Sample
View the selected sample outdoors. Screen colours are approximate, and texture, angle, gloss and daylight affect appearance.
Does a PVDF Metal Roof Require Maintenance?
Low maintenance does not mean no inspection. Keep gutters and drainage paths clear, prevent piles of leaves or wet debris from remaining against panels, and inspect after unusual storms or work by other trades. Avoid aggressive abrasives, unapproved chemicals and pressure-washing methods that can damage the finish or force water into roof details.
Do not assume scratches should be covered with ordinary paint. Touch-up products can weather differently from the factory finish and may become more visible over time. Follow the roofing or coating manufacturer’s written repair guidance. Foot traffic should also be limited and performed using the panel manufacturer’s instructions to avoid dents, slips and finish damage.
PVDF Kynar 500® Finish FAQ
Is Kynar 500® the metal roofing panel?
No. Kynar 500® is Arkema’s branded PVDF resin used in qualifying coating systems. The panel profile, steel, metallic coating, paint system and installation together form the complete roof.
Is every PVDF coating Kynar 500®?
No. PVDF is a chemistry category, while Kynar 500® is a specific registered resin brand. Ask for documentation identifying the resin-based coating and its manufacturer.
Does PVDF stop a metal roof from rusting?
The finish is one protective layer, but corrosion resistance also depends on the steel’s metallic coating, cut edges, scratches, drainage, incompatible materials, environmental exposure and installation quality.
Is PVDF better than a crinkle finish?
“Better” depends on the selected roofing product and homeowner priorities. PVDF is often specified for premium colour and chalk resistance. Does a Kynar 500® finish make the roof cooler?

Can Kynar 500® be applied to my roof after installation?

How long will the finish last?
