What Testing and Technical Evidence Does the Report Show?

Base metal and coating properties

The material table reports a measured base-metal thickness of 0.44 mm against a minimum requirement of 0.33 mm. It records passing results for coating quality, dry-film hardness, dry and wet coating adhesion, impact resistance, accelerated weathering, acid resistance and flexibility. The reported total dry-film thickness was 27 µm against a minimum requirement of 25 µm, and the abrasion result was 47 against a minimum requirement of 40.

The report also records a salt-spray rating of 7 after specimens were exposed in accordance with ASTM B117 for 1,000 hours. These are laboratory results for the evaluated specimens and criteria—not a prediction that any installed roof will be maintenance-free or immune to every environment.

Traffic load

The assessment records a pass for the required 900 N traffic load without plastic deformation or permanent lap openings that would adversely affect the roofing system’s function. It separately notes deformation when the Coastal Wave™ tile was loaded beyond its lower rib and directs users to follow manufacturer restrictions on walkability.

Wind uplift

The wind-uplift table records passing stages from −0.5 kPa through −4.8 kPa and identifies −5.8 kPa as the maximum sustained load under the described test setup. These pressure results should remain expressed as pressures under the published test configuration. They are not, by themselves, a universal wind-speed warranty for every building, roof geometry or location.

Dynamic pressure water infiltration

In the report’s dynamic rain test, the installed roof assemblies passed without leakage or damage at test wind speeds of 80, 110, 140 and 170 km/h, each with simulated rainfall of 3.4 L/m² per minute for five minutes. The report describes a 4-in-12 test roof with a valley, plywood sheathing and the specified underlayment arrangement.

Important distinction: a successful laboratory test at a stated wind speed is not the same thing as a blanket installed-roof wind warranty. Real-world performance also depends on design pressures, roof zones, building height and exposure, deck condition, compatible components, fastener placement, flashing and installation quality.

Conditions and Limitations Homeowners Should Know

The conditions are not fine print to ignore. They define the assembly for which CCMC expressed its compliance opinion. CCMC 14173-R includes the following important limitations:

  • The products are limited to roofs with a minimum slope of 1 in 4.
  • The products are limited to installations where no fire-resistance rating is required.
  • Panels must be installed over solid sheathing that complies with the identified NBC roof-sheathing requirements.
  • Flashing, eave protection and underlay must comply with the applicable requirements and manufacturer specifications.
  • For slopes between 1 in 3 and 1 in 4, the underlayment must be a manufacturer-specified self-adhered membrane.
  • Only panels with PVDF paint coatings are part of the CCMC evaluation. Other coating types were not evaluated under this report.
  • Only manufacturer-supplied fasteners and accessories may be used, and they must be compatible with the panels’ base metal.
  • Cedar Creek™ Shake and North Ridge™ Slate fasteners must be spaced no more than 195 mm on centre through the pre-drilled fastening-tab holes.
  • Coastal Wave™ fasteners must be spaced no more than 370 mm on centre, at every second flute, with at least four screws per tile.
  • The listed systems must be installed by trained installers in strict conformance with the manufacturer instructions identified by the report.
  • The product or packaging must be clearly identified with “CCMC 14173-R.”

The report also states that if its conditions and limitations conflict with the manufacturer’s installation requirements, the CCMC conditions and limitations govern. Applicable provincial code provisions, municipal requirements, permits and project-specific professional design responsibilities still remain relevant.

What a CCMC Evaluation Does Not Prove

CCMC recognition is meaningful, but accuracy matters. It should never be stretched beyond the published evidence. CCMC 14173-R does not establish that:

Achieving a CCMC assessment can represent a significant manufacturer investment because it is not a single test or a one-step application. It can involve technical review, product-specific criteria, third-party laboratory work, engineering analysis, documentation, quality controls and CCMC’s final compliance review.

A broad industry planning estimate sometimes cited for testing and evaluating a metal roofing product is $15,000 to $60,000+ CAD. That figure should not be described as an official NRC price or a guaranteed range. The NRC does not publish that amount as a universal total, and the real cost can move below or above it depending on the product, assessment path, existing evidence, number of configurations, laboratory program, engineering requirements, retesting and modifications.

CCMC reviews the product, intended use, installation and manufacturing information. It then identifies an existing standard or technical guide, or develops criteria when a suitable path does not already exist.
